For a Breath I Tarry

  1. FOR A BREATH I TARRY - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 vellum paper. It appears as the frontispiece in the book, "For a Breath I Tarry," by Roger Zelazny, published by Underwood-Miller in 1980.

When I received this commission I was a bit surprised that it was going to be produced as a hardcover book! The manuscript was a short story only 8 pages long! Incredibly, when the book was published I saw that the story text was distributed, with the addition of my drawings to 67 pages, with 40 blank pages added at the end of the book to thicken it out a bit more! Somehow, the publishers felt justified producing this short story as a "book"!

The story has been reprinted recently by NESFA Books in their 6 volume series, "The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny, Volume Two: Power and Light". It is one of 29 stories in the book. Now, That! Is a BOOK!
